Oral Assignment - "Seeing Strategy through Hobby"
Main Objective:
The purpose of this oral exercise is to acknowledge the strategic dimension or connotation of any activity that we perform in our lives, going from a formal job-related activity to a more informal leisure-related experience. Thus, you will be required to apply relevant strategic management tools or techniques to your hobbies to demonstrate how strategic you are in your execution of the hobbies of your choice.
Brief Description:
You can examine the usefulness and pertinence of different strategic management concepts and techniques through a non-traditional approach - that of your hobby, favorite pastime activity, or thing that you enjoy doing most in your life. This atypical way of approaching strategic management allows you to apply (in a more indirect and implicit fashion) the concepts that we are discussing in our strategic management class to the execution of your hobby in a way that allows you to achieve the highest level of effectiveness. In other words, you are expected to depict strategy and its different dimensions through the lens of your hobby.
Type of Hobby:
You can think of any hobby or extra-curricular activity that you enjoy very much. This hobby can be related to playing any type of sports, cooking, dancing, singing, drawing, travelling, designing, dreaming, swimming, chatting, reading, knitting, observing, etc. - in other words, anything you enjoy doing in your spare time.
Format of the Exercise:
This is an oral team-based exercise that requires an oral presentation to be made to the rest of the class. You should make this presentation in teams of 3-4 students (maximum of 4 students are allowed per team). Your team member selection is entirely up to you! Your oral presentationshould not be longer than 20 minutes and all teammates have to be actively involved in the presentation delivery. This involvement has to beexplicit and definitively be visible to others. The key requirement of this exercise is that you have to talk about the hobby of each member of your team (you are not allowed to choose only one hobby of one of your teammates), and, more importantly, connect the hobby of each member of your team in an innovative and surely strategic manner! The way how and for what purpose you connect the hobbies is a very important element of your presentation!
Presentation Aids:
In your presentation, you canmake use of any visual aid or support you would like which may effectively support your point of view or idea that you want to convey to the audience. Among these visual aids can be virtuallydisplaying a sample of the final hobby-related product that you have manufactured yourself, or showing a tool that is fundamental for you to successfully exercise your hobby, or even explaining how to perform the different steps of your hobby in front of your colleagues to demonstrate its strategic flavor. Alternatively, you can think of using your hobby to artfully express your understanding and application of different strategic management techniques, concepts and tools. Even more, you can talk metaphorically and strategically about a given hobby of yours without explicitly identifying it to your colleagues, so that at the end of your presentation your audience should be able to identify the hobby that you were talking about. You can also think about distributing online some handouts to students in order to make your presentation more effective. When making the connection between the hobbies of your team and strategy concepts, try to keep the hobbies' association with strategic management more implicit and indirect, without specifically indicating the strategic tools, concepts and frameworks that you used in the presentation. The class can be subsequently asked about the strategic management concepts that were used and could be recognized in your presentation.
Note: You are required to use PPT slides for this oral presentation. Make sure to upload the PPT slides on the relevant Safe Assignment link on ilearn prior to your presentation. Only one student per team has to upload the PPT presentation on ilearn. The grade will not be released unless you upload the PPT slides of your presentation on ilearn.
