Suppose you have a wind instrument that behaves like a long air pipe (like a flute or clarinet). If you play a note on the instrument-say, with your fingers in a certain position-you can play higher - frequency notes by overblowing (blowing harder and possibly tightening up your lip shape and muscles, or embouchure, but without changing the shape of the instrument or placement of your fingers). In other words, overblowing allows you to play different harmonics of the instrument.

(a) Suppose the lowest frequency of the instrument is 150 Hz. If the instrument behaves like both ends are open, what is the next higher pitch you can play? Give your answer as both a frequency and a musical interval relative to the first pitch. (Review Table 3-3 in the book.)

(b) What if the instrument behaves as if one end is closed and the other is open? (Clarinets, and I demonstrated this in class on the didgeridoo.) Again, give your answer as both a frequency and a musical interval relative to the first pitch.
