For this activity, you will need three different flavors of juice, soda, or tea. You will also need a blindfold (and likely someone to assist with the blindfold and various steps of the activity), something on which to record your results, a packet of sugar, some salt water, and your taste buds.
Directions: Have someone blindfold you and then one by one have you taste each type of beverage. Find out how well you were able to identify the different flavors. Once you have completed this aspect of the activity, wipe your tongue so that it is dry and then put some sugar on the dry part of your tongue. You will not be able to taste it. Your tongue must be wet for your taste buds to work. Now put some salt water on the back of your tongue and you will find that you can hardly taste it. But if you put some salt water on the front of your tongue, it will taste very salty. Since your sense of smell helps you taste things, put the blindfold back on and hold your nose and taste the beverages again. You will not be able to tell what they.
