Contrast the differences in the level of confidence between these two individuals

  • Scenario 1: Carol has a master's degree in health information management and is a registered health information administrator (RHIA). For 10 years she has been director of a health information management (HIM) department, responsible for 45 employees. Her scope of duties includes management, budgeting, monitoring, planning, as well as directing the functions of coding and reimbursement, the release of information, document imaging, chart deficiency analysis, physician record completion, transcription, and master patient index (MPI) maintenance. Carol has avoided stretching herself professionally. In the past when career advancement opportunities have risen, Carol always gets a sinking feeling in her stomach and believes she does not have the skills for success. Afraid of failing, Carol never takes advantage of advancing her career. A corporate director of HIM services position opened recently in her health system with oversight of four acute-care facilities and 200 employees. However, Carol doubts she can handle a larger scope of responsibility and is hesitant to apply for the job. She fears she does not have the capabilities to assume this level of responsibility or initiate changes to challenge the status quo.
  • Scenario 2: Kelly graduated two years ago with a bachelor's degree in health information management and is an RHIA. Since graduation Kelly has been an associate director of HIM operations at a large acute-care facility. She is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the clinical coding unit and oversees the clinical reimbursement managers ensuring efficient execution of key functions that align to projected operational and financial goals. Kelly is the key patient financial services liaison responsible for monitoring, adjusting, and prioritizing workflow to meet revenue cycle goals. Even though Kelly has just two years of HIM experience in a limited area when she heard about the job opening for a corporate HIM director she jumped at the chance to apply for the position. Kelly believed her problem-solving, organization, social awareness, and communication skills would make up for any deficit in broad HIM operational experience. Kelly considered the new position an extension of her already tested abilities and she was determined to apply and get the job.
