Question: Based on the information provided in the assigned articles, there is significant research to support the conclusion that individuals with developmental disabilities are not provided sufficient support. Overall literature suggests there is some access to healthcare, but there are disparities in the quality of care. Several studies report high rates of unrecognized medical problems. Individuals with developmental disabilities are often overlooked and are not provided with good general service. There are also concerns regarding the service providers who are meant to meet the needs of these individuals.

To effectively be provided health services, the providers should possess the correct skills and be educated on how to meet individual needs. According to Porisky & Minnes (2009), there are disparities that exist which can cause potential barriers for individuals with DD to receive effective care. Disparities include differences in prevalence rates of adverse health conditions, disparities in attention to care needs including lack of practitioner knowledge of DD and communication barriers, disparities in preventative care and health promotion practices, and disparities in equitable access to healthcare (Porisky & Minnes, 2009).

To overcome these barriers, services should be readily available and provided by service providers who are adequately trained in the field. The focus should be shifted to ensuring individuals with DD are satisfied with the care that is given to them.
