Problem #1

You represent the nursing department on a newly formed interdisciplinary team to look at medication errors and medication safety. You are one of seven team members. The Pharmacy Director, also a team member, has a very assertive communication style. The Pharmacy Director dominates meeting conversations and does not appear open to adopting new processes requiring the pharmacy department to take on additional work and responsibility. Instead, the Pharmacy Director redirects the ideas back to you and states, "This is a nursing responsibility."

As a Nurse Leader, examine and discuss communication strategies you would employ in answering the following questions:

a) What assertive strategies would you use in response to the Pharmacy Director- to Redirect the dominance of communication by one team member.

b) What have you learned are differences in gender regarding communication?
