Breastfeeding offers many health benefits for infants and mothers; however, breastfeeding can be challenging for many mothers, and mothers that choose to breastfeed often stop early. Some researchers suggest breastfeeding is an issue of health equity because women with low SES are much less likely to breastfeed or continue breastfeeding than women with higher levels of income and education. What factors might account for these differences between women from lower and higher levels of SES? Hint: Consider the many factors that may be associated with lower income.
