In reading I have found there are several differences between TRICARE Prime and TRICARE Select. TRICARE Prime is managed care like a HMO plan, a primary care manager is assigned and they would need to get any referrals or authorizations to specialist from the PCM. TRICARE Select is self-managed like a PPO where no referrals or authorizations are needed to to be seen by any doctor of choice that accepts TRICARE Select. Where Prime has no out of pocket deductibles to be paid by active duty members. Select has costs for enrollment, an annual outpatient deductible and cost shares for some services covered. Select members tends to pay more however does not have to wait to be seen by Drs. when needed.

There is one benefit both Prime and Select receive - the catastrophic cap benefit which protects from financial loss when a severe illness or long term treatment is needed. There is a maximum of how much out of pocket the family or member would have to pay for each calendar year.

In having several family members who are in the military (active, reserve and veteran) I feel the benefits they receive are adequate, as I have not heard any complaints. My opinion on what I know and hear from members of the service and their families. They have adequate coverage for themselves and their loved ones.
