To understand the role of corrections in our society, it's important to know how it all began. By examining the history of punishment and corrections we can learn what aspects were effective at "correcting" behaviors and how some systems resulted in major shifts in the law regarding the treatment of incarcerated individuals. Chapter 3 provides an overview of the development of prisons as we know them today. More specifically, the Walnut Street Jail, Newgate Prison, and the Pennsylvania and Auburn systems will be explored.
For this assignment, please compare the differences between the Pennsylvania (separate system) and Auburn prison system (congregate model). For example, what were the underlying goals of each and what were key differences in their approach to reach those goals. Chapter 3 examines the observations of Dorothea Dix as well as Beaumont and Tocqueville who outline several concerns about the state of jails and prisons. Later, the 1870 American Prison Congress was considered the first major prison reform. What changes resulting from the 1870 American Prison Congress remain? Please use Chapter 3 to help you develop your paper, be specific, and provide examples.
