3. Interestingly, at this point in the evolution of the squirrels of the Grand Canyon, these two groups of squirrels are actually not considered to be two different species yet. Instead they are considered to be two different subspecies of the same species (Sciurus aberti kaibabensis vs. Sciurus aberti aberti). Since these populations are isolated from each other, they cannot mate. However, based on the biological definition of species, if you could bring squirrels of different sexes for each of these two subspecies together in the same place, would you expect them to be able to interbreed or not?
