Assignment:
1. The drug cytohalasin B blocks the function of actin. Describe, which of the processes of cell division would be disrupted by cytohalasin B? Motivate your answer.
2. Please name the DNA reparation mechanism responsible for the reparation of UV-induced damages in DNA. Name both sub-pathways of this DNA reparation mechanism, explain when each of them is used. In one of these sub-pathways a part of the proteins involved in the other sub-pathway is unnecessary; what function do these proteins have?
3. Please name the DNA reparation mechanisms for reparation of double-strand breaks. Compare the accuracy of these mechanisms. Which of them can be used in the G1 phase of the cell cycle?
4. Explain the epigenetic regulation during the gametogenesis in general: name 2 directions, where epigenetic regulation is used. Compare the epigenetic regulation in males and females.
5. Describe three steps in spermiogenesis (last stage of the spermatogenesis) in detail. Relate each step to its significance for the fertilization.
6. Name differences between gated and non-gated channel proteins (2 differences). Describe the function of non-gated channel proteins.
7. Explain importance of cell-cell junctions in organism by naming type of junction and explanation of its role or function.
8. Describe a scenario where disease could not be diagnosed by genomic methods but could be diagnosed by proteome analysis (to name the disease is not required). The patient has symptoms of inherited autosomal recessive disease (both alleles should have an allelic variant).
His elder brother also has same symptoms. To confirm diagnosis of suspected disease, doctor sends blood samples of both brothers to the genetic lab. The suspected disease has one common allelic variant, seen in ~70% of alleles. Other allelic variants are comparably rare. Please describe which methods you would choose to confirm diagnosis for patients. Motivate your answer.
