a. The Minister of Education sought to establish the effectiveness of a staff development programme on the teaching of English in primary schools. Before teachers began the programme their teaching methods were evaluated together with their classes’ reading competences. On completion of the programme, the teachers were taken back to their classes and assessed as before. In both cases extraneous factors were controlled.

i. Determine if the research is either descriptive or experimental. Justify your answer.

ii. Identify any possible factors that were controlled.

iii. What was the purpose of controlling extraneous factors?
