Imagine an adult male client who has participated in Twelve-Step meetings for the past year. Although he has had periods of abstinence lasting 4-5 weeks at a time during this year, he relapses frequently. His partner has pushed him to make an appointment to see about substance use counseling. After the initial assessment, it seems the client is a good candidate for the outpatient substance use counseling group. The client says to you, "I don't understand why I should go to group counseling. I already go to two AA meetings a week. Why should I come to a group counseling too?"

How would you describe the similarities and differences between a Twelve-step group and Group Counseling to this client?
