Explain the main differences between a single gene and an operon. Describe how point-mutations occur. This is not asking what a point-mutation is or to describe different types, but how they actually happen in the first place. 5. Identify and characterize point mutations. As you did in class, your analysis should include what type of mutation has occurred (e.g. nonsense mutation) as well as a prediction for the resulting phenotype of the organism. Answer the following questions to walk yourself through the process. o How do you identify a mutation? o How do you classify the type of mutation that has occurred (silent, missense, nonsense, frameshift)? o What kind of affects does that type of mutation typically have? o How can you relate this effect to the phenotype you would observe? o See examples in your group work and Exam Practice Problems (this is a hyperlink).
