"Thiazide diuretics will often increase serum levels of sodium, potassium, and chloride, while loop diuretics will decrease these electrolytes." "Thiazide diuretics block some reabsorption of sodium and chloride, but loop diuretics only block the reabsorption of potassium." "Loop diuretics are used initially as a treatment for hypertension, but if they aren't effective, thiazides are often the next step." "Thiazides and loops work in a similar manner but thiazides aren't quite as strong in their diuretic effect or their decrease of electrolytes."
