In relation to support systems/support networks substance use counselling. In my experience in working in the field of addictions, often times a strong support system can have different meanings, impacts, and influences on different people. There are some clients that I have worked with whom have found great benefit from support systems in the form of family/friends, whereas other clients have found this less helpful and have found support systems such as support groups, detox centres, and other avenues to be more helpful. At the end of the day, based on my experience, it's about figuring out what the term "support system" means for the client to see how we can assist the client in leveraging that support system to sustain positive outcomes. One of the exercises I like to do with clients to get a good grasp of this is often a support eco-map (I use this for both addictions and non-addictions clients). I've attached a file of a very basic one that I use with all sorts of clients for your reference. If you google "Support system map" or "support eco map" you will find lots of other variations too.
