WRITE A PEER RESPONSE TO DEEPEN DISCUSSION
"Under the newly-unveiled list of single-use plastics being banned in Canada, plastic grocery bags, straws, stir sticks, six-pack rings, cutlery, and food containers made from hard-to-recycle plastics will be out of use nationwide by the end of 2021." (Aiello, 2020)
This ban will impact businesses in the food and beverage industry the most with the significant cost difference for alternative products. "At this time when many businesses are counting every dollar, any extra costs could make the difference between staying open and closing for good." (Aiello, 2020)
According to the Canadian Government motives for the change could include:
- Single-use plastics make up most of the plastic litter that is found in freshwater environments.
- Up to 15 billion plastic bags are used every year and close to 57 million straws are used daily.
- Over 35 countries around the world have already taken action by banning certain single-use plastics, including U.K., France, Italy.
- The cost of cleanup and recycling are passed on to taxpayers and residents.
Potential benefits from single-use plastics ban may include:
- Plastic bans enhance the economy.
- Marine life improvement.
- Drainage infrastructures run more efficiently.
- Plastic bans reduce the need for petroleum.
- Decrease the mosquito population.
- Reduces taxpayers' cost of litter pick up.
"The actions by governments, corporations, and individuals to mitigate and manage plastic pollution should be applauded, rather than framed as a distraction. Plastic may be convenient, but there is nothing convenient about plastic pollution." (Walker, Mallory, Avery-Gomm, 2019)
