Essential Nutrients Essay

1. Explain the roles that each of the following nutrients has in maintaining our health: (please separate each nutrient into its own paragraph so they don't all run together) Carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, vitamins, minerals, water and fiber.

2. Explain how many calories there are per gram for each nutrient. (i.e. 1 gram of water= 0 Kcals).

3. Explain what are fat-soluble vitamins (and list them) as well as what are water-soluble vitamins (and list them). What foods are good sources for each vitamin?

4. Explain what percent of an ideal daily caloric intake should be carbohydrate, fat and protein.

5. Explain the difference between saturated and unsaturated fats. Give examples of each.

6. Explain the difference between HDL and LDL cholesterol. What are triglycerides? What are healthy levels of total blood cholesterol and blood triglycerides?

7. Explain how much water and fiber a person should consume each day.

8. Explain how many servings for each food group the Food Guide Pyramid recommends each day. (i.e. Grains/Cereals 6-11 servings).

9. Explain nutrient dense food. Give examples of nutrient dense foods.

10. Explain "complete protein". Give examples of complete proteins.

11. Explain the difference between a macromineral and a micromineral. Give examples of each and list foods that are good sources for each mineral. The Essay should be in paragraph format. Each question should have a separate paragraph for the corresponding number
