Answer the following questions:

  1. What is one chemical you use every day? Describe the chemical and how it impacts your life. A sufficient response will contain at least 30 words.
  2. Is the chemical you named a natural or synthetic chemical? How do you know? 
  3. Could this chemical be dangerous to humans? Describe how this chemical could negatively impact people. 
  4. Explain the difference between natural and synthetic chemicals. 
  5. Can synthetic chemicals have origins in nature, or are they completely man-made? Give examples and explain your answer.
  6. Look at the Important Chemicals in Human History chart. Pick the chemical that you think is the most important to modern human life. (Ignore water for this question). Explain your answer.
  7. What type of chemicals do you think will be the "next big thing" in the future? What do you predict will be the type of chemical that will change our future just like penicillin, plastic, or gunpowder did? 
  8. Look at the Important Chemicals in Human History chart. Pick a chemical that you feel is the most important to you. Think about your everyday life and what really matters. (Ignore water for this question, too). Support your answer with examples from your life.

Sodium Stearate

This is the active ingredient in soap. It works by helping oil dissolve in water. Good hygiene is important to prevent the spread of disease.

Silicon

Silicon is a key component of computer chips and circuits. It is also used in solar cells, waterproofing seals, and explosives.

Polyethylene

The most abundant plastic in the world, polyethylene is used in grocery bags, plastic bottles, and artificial joints.
