The Nature of Managerial Work
You have been elected as the leader of a four-member project group. Successful completion of the applied project is crucial because this is one of the graduation requirements. The title of your research project is . You enjoy the challenges in doing this project as it provides a good opportunity to examine first-hand how senior management performs their work in real settings. Your group plans to observe and interview 2 senior managers in a public hospital over a three- month period.
One month has passed by. A major challenge facing you and your project mates is that senior management are remarkably busy. Participant observations and in-depth interviews sometimes have to be carried out during odd hours and on Saturdays or Sundays. One of your members, George, often gave excuses for not making a weekend visit when it was his turn. Several times, he sent you urgent text messages saying that he had to work that day or a family member was sick and he needed you to take over from him. You notice that George's dependency on you has grown out of hand. You believe he is taking advantage of you and you must take appropriate action now. George says this is not true. He is just experiencing role overload and role ambiguity.
