Using and citing course materials, respond to the following:
- Discuss the difference between equal opportunity and equal outcomes and what that difference means to various people and diverse groups.
- Explain how social movements might emerge from differing understandings of these ideas.
Response by my classamate: WARREN
Drawing from the video, I am more familiar with the concept of equal opportunity, which I often hear. My take on it refers to having an equal chance at progressing in specific physical, mental, economic, or socio-economic areas. Individuals can be slighted in some areas depending on their race or gender, so the aim is to level out this playing field. Equal opportunity, on the other hand, means everyone should arrive at the same destination regardless of any advantages or disadvantages they may have. These two thoughts incite social movements because they are two disparate ideals that appeal to different audiences. Depending on your perspective, you may have a stance in support or against another, finding yourself in a similar position in a larger group.
Your stance is shaped mainly by your life experiences; some might argue they were underprivileged in their upbringing and, therefore, at a disadvantage to their peers. With this mindset, you are a proponent of the equal opportunity mindset. It would benefit you if the government supported efforts to narrow the gap between you and your peers. Also, your gripe pertains to the state of the government and how it may perpetuate certain behaviors that negatively affect a particular group.
