Governance, Ethics and Sustainability
Assessment - Code of Ethics Workplace Simulation
Your Task
Analyse a short case study (realistic scenario) and prepare a short, written report.
Assessment Description
A thorough understanding of how a company's Code of Ethics must be worded to effectively communicate behavioural expectations is an essential managerial competency.
Learning Outcome 1: Evaluate the success (or lack thereof) of an organisation's governance responsibilities
Learning Outcome 2: Analyse the legal and regulatory environment in Australia with a view to understanding its impact on business strategy
Learning Outcome 3: Analyse the role of the board in the assessment of strategy and risk, and the way in which this expertise can be better utilised
Learning Outcome 4: Apply corporate sustainability practices in a real-world example and examine their appropriateness in a variety of contexts
Prepare short, written report-style responses to each of the questions given as part of the Case Study.
Case Study: DayFun is an early learning organisation, specialising in childcare services and nursery education across three Australian states (Queensland, NSW and Victoria). After three years of steady growth, DayFun is adding nanny services to its portfolio.
1. DayFun already follows an industry Code of Ethics:
What advantages would there be to payFu.n, in having their own in-house Code of Conduct?
2. CEO's question:
Can we draw a line in the workplace between playful sexual innuendo, and sexual harassment?
Wider Board question:
How do we draw a firm line between harassment in general and workplace bullying?
3. What is the difference between corruption and fraud?
Should these be handled under a single Code section? Or do they require separate treatment?
4. Could the company Code of Conduct specify acceptable terms of social media use, for all payfy,n employees?
5. Provide a single full References list for all sources use across your responses. Use KBS Australian Harvard as the referencing format.
(1) For Question 1, you are provided with the finks to the two specific Codes that our fictional business should be attending to. whether or not they write their own Company Code of Conduct:
Early Childhood Australia (ECA) Code of Ethics
Australian Nanny Association (ANA) Member Code of Conduct (available to download through the link under the Case Study instructions).
One link appears under the Board question, and the other link under Joshua Hardy's notes. Those notes further include two links that discuss the nature of different species of Code. but without necessarily providing particular Code documents to look at.
Slides 10 -13 in the Week 6 workshop slides provide many more weblinks, to get you thinking about different aspects of industry-wide Codes of Practice (mandatory versus voluntary) versus company-specific Codes of Conduct. As you prepare your response to Question 1. it would be a good idea to explore a good subset of the links provided in these slides.
(2) As the Special Workshop indicates, it is not necessary to go beyond the case study document, to find scandals to discuss. Stick with the three scandals in the Case Study document, selecting two of these to discuss under Question 1 (one that the ECA or ANA code covers, and one scandal that the same Code does give guidance on).
Given the tight word limit, you do not need to discuss both Codes (ECA and ANA) for this portion of the question.
Further note that the ANA Code is not likely to apply to child carers working in a day care centre.
