Assignment:
Please watch the following three clips from Raging Bull (1980), Creed, and Snatch. All three of these scenes are a boxing match that use Editing and Sound Design in different ways. For each question, use one of the three scenes as the example to analyze. You cannot repeat the same example twice. You will need to discuss all three.
Raging Bull - Directed by the great Martin Scorsese. This is the climatic boxing match between Jake LaMotta and Sugar Ray Robinson. This is the last fight in a long rivalry. Jake is at the end of his boxing career.
Snatch - Directed by Guy Ritchie (Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Sherlock Holmes) This is the climatic final fight by Mickey O'Neil (Brad Pitt). Mickey is supposed to throw the fight, or a gangster will murder him and his friends and family.
Creed - Directed by Ryan Coogler (Black Panther, Fruitvale Station). Excellent fight between Adonis Johnson and Leo 'The Lion" Sporino.
1. How does the editing contribute to this scene? Explain the difference between continuity editing and discontinuity editing. Does this scene mostly use continuity editing, discontinuity editing or a mixture of both? Is the editing mainly seamless and nearly unnoticeable, or does it call attention to itself? Why do you think the filmmakers made these choices? Give examples of specific editing techniques the filmmakers chose in this scene.

3. In the scene, how is music used? Is it used in a dominate way to manipulate the audience's emotions, or is it more subtle or non-existent?
