Case: Dr. Karev is making his pitch to Chief Bailey for his plan to open an Urgent Care facility in Friday Harbor, Washington; a rural area with a population of 2,300 residents and the closest hospital being nearly 2 hours away and requiring both sea and land travel. He has research the community and know the residents prefers "home remedies" and more natural approaches to medical treatment so thinks a D.O. would be the best option for the supervising physician. He knows to fully staff the clinic he will need to hire several Physician Assistants (PA) or Nurse Practitioners (NP. He also knows he will need a couple of nurses or medical assistants. One of his board members has also suggested Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA). Chief Bailey like the idea of using Avery Foundation money to serve rural areas but is a little fuzzy on Dr. Karev's credential preferences and options. Dr. Karev asks you, the HCA that will be running the clinic to clear things up for Chief Bailey. Please address the following questions.
Question 1. What is the key difference between an MD and a DO making the DO ) a better choice for Friday Harbor?
Question 2. PA's are required to do more clinical training in a variety of specialties and in most cases, must operate under the direction of a doctor. NP's generally specialize in a specific area of practice such as family medicine, pediatrics, or oncology and can diagnose, treat, and prescribe without the direct supervision of a doctor in many instances. Which credential would be most beneficial for the Friday Harbor area and why?
Question 3. You have nursing and medical assistant applicants with the following credentials: MA, RN, LPN, and CNA. Since you are just opening, you can only select one credential. Which would you recommend for the Friday Harbor Urgent Care and why?
