Evidence-Based Practice is the combination of applying both research findings and the nurse's clinical knowledge to provide care for our patients best.

The difference between a nursing practice problem and a medical practice problem is the difference in the scope of our practice. Take, for example, infections such as CAUTI. The medical problem would relate to treating CAUTI with medications and ordering labs to determine the causative agent and guide treatment (Hooton et al., 2010). Additionally, a medical practice problem can begin with why the patient may need a catheter to start with or whether the patient was treated with antibiotics prophylactically. As nurses, however, we can use evidence-based Practice to minimize the chances that our patients will suffer from CAUTI before needing medication or diagnostic testing. For example, we can apply evidence-based Practice to both insertions of the catheter and use our nursing judgment to decide when it is appropriate to discontinue the catheter (Hooton et al., 2010).

The PICOT is basically a question that should be asked when we notice a nursing practice problem. Basing out PICOT questions on nursing practice problems allows us to direct our research into finding an evidence-based practice solution to the problem (Schiavenato & Chu, 2021). This helps the nursing community address the problem and provide evidence-based care within our scope of Practice. On the other hand, basing the PICOT question on a medical practice problem might benefit patients. Still, it would not help the nursing community advance our knowledge of how to apply interventions for patient care in the future.
