Case Incident - What is a Human Resources Consultant to Do?

Michael Smith is the owner of a local management consulting firm that helps companies hire staff has an establishment in Southern Ontario. He is looking to expand his services through a digital platform to expand his market. A recent advertising campaign through this new online service has led to a new partnership with an independent pharmaceutical company in Toronto. After meeting with the owner of the pharmaceutical business, it is clear that the owner is seeking help to create and write job descriptions for various positions in the company. Some of these positions will include cashiers, store managers, store assistants, inventory managers, and many others. The owner would like to see a job description for a key role, the HR Manager, before he signs the contract with you. This will be a key role who will help to write the other job descriptions. You have just been hired to produce this job description for his new pharmaceutical client. He is asking you to answer the following questions:

1. Please explain the difference between a job description and a job specification. Please provide an example as part of your answer to illustrate the difference.

2. It has been suggested that qualitative methods produce the best job descriptions. Please explain to the owner of the business if you would encourage this method? Provide your rationale.

3. For your job description, what would you need to change in light of COVID-19? What areas might be different? Please explain at least 2.
