Objectives
• To develop a creative approach to the design process that will inform various design decisions.
• To begin to develop space planning and circulation through diagramming.
• To apply regulatory standards within the preliminary planning process.
• To access programmatic requirements and apply them to a strategic planning approach.
• To apply research within the design development stages.

Description
This assignment allows students to begin the creative process of their project through concept development and preliminary space planning. Through a combination of visual activities, program analysis, and diagramming, students will begin the design process of their healthcare project and utilize the results for further exploration in future assignments.

Instructions

Part 1: Concept Development
1. Review the DIDS220_Handouts_Assignments_2-4.pdf to understand the type of clinic you will be designing.
2. Begin your concept development through word association. Create a hierarchy type of diagram demonstrating your word associations. See the example provided.
3. You can present this association digitally or through sketch format. Create one page as your deliverable for this exercise.
4. Choose a final path (word) for concept exploration from you diagramming. This word will be your concept.
5. Utilizing the concept word, select 5 images that represent that word. Place all 5 images on one page.
6. Finalize your concept by selecting one image that you feel represents your concept and approach to your project. Place the word, image and your own sketch of this image on one page.
7. You will have a total of 3 pages for Part 1
a. Word Associations and hierarchy type of diagram
b. 5 concept images representing your one chosen word,
c. Final word, chosen image and sketch.

Part 2: Parti Diagrams
1. Utilizing the floor plan as an underlay, begin to visual the space and the volumes you will be creating.
2. Think about your concept and the "feel" of the space - utilize this to develop the shapes and volumes for your diagram.
3. Think about the visual weight of each of your spaces - what are the focal points and what are supporting services.
4. Understand the exits in your suite and possible circulation.
5. Develop 3 distinct Parti Diagrams. Each diagram must look at the spatial organization differently in terms of circulation patterns and focal area positioning. These diagrams are in sketch format and should take into consideration the suite shape and shell.
6. You will have one Page for Part 2 that has your 3 diagrams demonstrated.

Part 3: Bubble Diagram
1. Utilizing your Parti Diagram exploration, choose one diagram you wish to explore further.
2. Create a bubble diagram showing spatial allocation of all programmatic requirements, circulation, daylight and adjacencies.
3. You will have one Page for Part 3 which will have your final bubble diagram demonstrated.

Part 4: Preliminary 2D Space Planning
1. Utilizing your Parti, bubble diagramming and concept, begin to develop a 2D floor plan addressing all programmatic requirements.
2. Utilizing the CAD plan provided, draft a 2D plan of your suite containing the following elements:
a. The base building walls, columns, doors and windows are to remain as shown. These elements cannot be relocated.
b. New interior partitions
c. Doors and interior window locations (if applicable to your design)
d. Any built-in furniture such as a reception desk, cabinetry.
e. Room names.

3. You will have one Page for Part 4 which will have your 2D space plan of the suite demonstrated. Ensure you have a small Key Plan of the floor demonstrating the location of your suite and then an enlarged floor plan showing just your suite design.

Format
The following is the expected outcome of this project:
• Format is on 11'' x 17'' sheets - landscape orientation.
• Include a title page
• Cite your sources using APA style.
