Assignment -

Punishment can be a controversial topic, especially for those who do not define punishment as we are in this course. For us, punishment is specifically defined by its effect on behavior. If the behavior decreases following a consequence, punishment has occurred (functional definition).

Regardless, punishment can produce both negative side effects and escape and avoidance behaviors. Think back on a time when you were punished for something. Did you repeat the behavior? Did you have any hard feelings toward the person who punished you? Have you ever had the occasion to punish someone for a bad behavior? How did the punishment work? Do you now wish you had thought of another course of action?
