Suggestions on what to include in your Blog Posting:

1. When discussing a patient, the student will not use the patient's name, but will instead refer to them by the word "patient". When making comments on the instructors that the student interacted with, the student will refer to them in the general sense using the term "Faculty or Perio Faculty or Restorative Faculty". The student will also refer to the DH II/Dental student by the term "student". Basically, no names are to be mentioned throughout the blogging assignment.

2. Give a brief synopsis of the surgery. Include findings of medical review, vital signs, tobacco status, extra and intra-oral exam, periodontal diagnosis, reason for surgery.

3. Identify the type of appointment being observed.

4. Indicate what services were provided during the appointment. For example: data collection, oral hygiene instructions, scaling, etc.

5. Describe the oral hygiene instructions given to the patient. Did the student use printed patient education materials or use of tell-show-do method? Did the student review etiologic factors for the disease process? Was the patient receptive to the information provided?

6. What instruments were used during the appointment?

7. Did the student use local anesthesia or general anesthesia?

8. Explain faculty interactions with the patient and student, as well as dental student interactions. Include information regarding faculty checks, consultations, etc....

9. Did anything surprise you during the appointment? What did you learn? How did it make you feel? What questions do you have now? Was the experience helpful to your learning? What are some positive aspects of the experience? What would you change about the experience? How do you think this experience will contribute to your success in the dental hygiene program?
