Question: While the War had been fought by some to abolish slavery, there were still huge issues with racism in the North. Many Northerners had little sympathy with the plight of newly freed slaves and held the same racist attitudes and assumptions as their Southern brethren. They did not support some of the core concepts of Reconstruction and were more than happy to allow the new citizens to languish in limbo in the South.
