A Probation Officers Home Visit-Ethical decision making
Probation officer Dwayane Jackson is conducting a routine visit at the home of an offender, Rock Johnson, who has been convicted of hacking into the local government's computer system. One of the conditions of Johnson's probation is that he is not able to own or use any computer.
During the home visit, Jackson notices a laptop computer sitting on the kitchen counter. Jackson asks Johnson, Who's computer is that? Thats my son's computer," Johnson quickly responds. He needs it for school. Junior is interested in becoming an engineer and he needs the laptop to keep up with his courses.
Okay, but | need to search the computer, Jackson responds. Jackson searches the computer and does not notice any signs of hacking. However, he sees evidence that someone has visited pornographic sites. The sites are clearly legal, but Jackson is embarrassed to see some of them.
1. Did Dwayne Jackson do the right thing by searching the computer?
2. Should he do anything based on the results of this computer search?
