Raj Persaud is a 9 year old boy who has recently been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. He is required to test his blood sugar 3x a day and is prescribed insulin BID. He is currently an inpatient on the pediatric ward until his diabetes is stabilized and he is able to return home. Raj's parents are with him at the hospital, his mother is a stay at home mom but has limited English understanding. His father speaks and understands English but is frequently out of town on business trips. Raj seems to have some understanding of the need for insulin but does not seem to understand the dietary requirements as he was caught eating chocolates that his roommate offered him. You are required to provide diabetes teaching to Raj and his parents regarding this new diagnosis and care.
