Maxine Brief Case Study Maxine is a 69-year-old woman who was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) 5 years ago. She lives in her own home with her husband. Maxine enjoys an active life and particularly enjoys gardening and using her computer for communication with her children and friends, shopping, and computer games. Until recently, her RA did not cause her many problems with her daily activities. However, she had a flare-up of her condition a few months ago and now experiences pain in her wrists and hands, limited strength, and ROM in her daily activities. Maxine also notices that she has less sensation in her fingers, which causes her to drop items. She knows that some devices are available with the potential to make doing activities easier. In particular, she wants devices that will make it easier to get dressed, to use the computer, and to continue her gardening. When dressing she notices difficulties doing up small buttons, bending over to put on socks and pants, and grasping clothing items, for example, when pulling up her pants. At the computer, she experiences pain in her wrist, thumb, and metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joints when using the computer for more than 30 minutes.
