Cassandra is a single mother of a 6-year-old boy named Jacob. Jacob was diagnosed with autism. The doctors told Cassandra and her husband that he needs extensive, lifelong care. Her husband was unable to accept the diagnosis, and left Cassandra and Jacob. He pays child support regularly, but he has no interest in developing a relationship with Jacob. Cassandra cares for him on a full-time basis. She also works to support the family. Her family of origin helps, but she takes on most of Jacob's care alone. As Jacob prepares for school, The Families with Disabilities Support Center contacted Cassandra to begin the process of determining his level of care. She brought Jacob in for his assessment; however, the advanced human services professional observed that Cassandra seemed extremely attached to Jacob. She expressed that she did not want him to attend school. Cassandra also seemed tired, listless, and worn out. The advanced human services professional practitioner decided to conduct an assessment of Cassandra's emotional and mental status and determine what services the disability office can refer to support Jacob's care.
