Question

One health disparity is the prevalence and outcomes in diabetes in different racial and ethnic groups. Hispanics and African Americans have higher rates of diabetes than others in the United States (Johns Hopkins Medicine, 2017). Statistically these groups have poorer outcomes due to diabetes because of factors like lack of access to healthcare, socioeconomic factors and as well as cultural belief (Johns Hopkins Medicine, 2017). To help combat diabetes in Hispanics and African Americans, we can improve the way we educate the population by tailoring the education to their language, and cultural beliefs. Educate them based on the foods they normally eat and tailor their diet to that norm. Improving access to healthcare remains one of the tops ways we can help combat diabetes. Screening and early detection can help prevent poorer outcomes as people usually do not know they are predisposed. If we can improve access to healthcare, we can provide outreach programs and educations so that they can be advocates for themselves.
