Although there are considerable differences between business and scholarly writing, there are also similarities. “In developing one’s scholarly writing skills, it is important to learn to avoid common technical writing errors” (Lambie, Sias, Davis, Lawson, and Akos, 2008, p. 21). The top common errors in general writing are lack of support statements, poor organization and flow, grammar, and subject-matter connection (Lambie, Sias, Davis, Lawson, &Akos, 2008). I find these errors to be true, for both, scholarly and technical writing. 

I agree that doctoral-level students are expected to have an in-depth knowledge of the field or profession they are writing about. This is slightly different from how things are handled in my workplace. The Technical Writers are expected to have some background in the areas they are responsible for documenting; however, most of the specialized data is provided by a subject matter expert (SME). SME’s are responsible for providing the Writers with current material and keeping them abreast on current events relating to their area of expertise. The doctorate program will bring new challenges my way. I look forward to the journey that lies ahead!
