Historical events that have shaped the development of quality improvement (QI) in healthcare started with the civil war which lasted from 1861 to 1865. Many doctors believed in those days that bloodletting was a form of treatment, the more critical you were meant the more blood you needed to lose. Many people lost their lives due to bloodletting. (South, 2024). In 1846 a Hungarian obstetrician names Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis discovered handwashing to the best intervention to preventing the spread of disease and other healthcare associated infections. (Definitive Healthcare, 2022). In 1860 Florence Nightingale worked during the Crimean war which highlighted the importance of caring for the wounded in sanitary conditions. By improving the sanitary conditions, it also improved the patient outcomes. She used her experience in the war to lay the groundwork for evidence-based practice. (Definitive Healthcare, 2022). From the war ending to the start of the Victorian era in 1901, healthcare knowledge advanced significantly due to the opportunity and necessity to experience alternative approaches in medicine during the war.
