Discussion 10 - Who owns your career?
This discussion looks at what career development from the perspective of multiple stakeholders. From a personal point of view, you certainly benefit from training and development opportunities but do you own it? Is that "investment" like a software license where you pay for the right to use the program but the software company still "owns" the product? Or is that investment something you "own" outright?
For example, if you received specialized training from one company-then went to work for another company that needed the same skill but didn't pay for your training-is that fair? Should the first company receive compensation for something they were not able to benefit from? Some people suggest this is why the federal government should be responsible for all training and development but is that the government's responsibility? How could the government pay for it all? Should you have to pay for training in specific skills before you qualify for certain jobs?
After reflecting on the content for this module, answer the following questions:
- Who do you think "owns" your career and is ultimately responsible for your development? The company where you work? The government? Or You?
- How does training and development tie into career planning?
