ICTTEN614 Conduct network system optimisation and administration
Task 1 - Network system optimisation and administration
ASSESSOR NOTE
These instructions must be followed when assessing the student in this unit. The checklist on the following page is to be completed for each student. Please refer to separate mapping document for specific details relating to alignment of this task to the unit requirements.
This competency is to be assessed using standard and authorised work practices, safety requirements and environmental constraints.
Assessment of essential underpinning knowledge will usually be conducted in an off-site context.
Assessment is to comply with relevant regulatory or Australian standards' requirements.
Resource implications for assessment include:
• an induction procedure and requirement
• realistic tasks or simulated tasks covering the mandatory task requirements
• relevant specifications and work instructions
• tools and equipment appropriate to applying safe work practices
• support materials appropriate to activity
• workplace instructions relating to safe work practices and addressing hazards and emergencies
• material safety data sheets
• research resources, including industry related systems information.
Reasonable adjustments for people with disabilities must be made to assessment processes where required. This could include access to modified equipment and other physical resources, and the provision of appropriate assessment support.
This assessment task requires you to conduct optimisation and administration activities for a network system, including:
preparing methodologies for system maintenance
producing cost-benefit analyses and training for database optimisation and administration
reviewing development of training instructions
conducting system measurements
developing support processes for system users
managing user accounts and security procedures
investigating potential system administration problems and make recommendations.
Throughout the process, you are required to optimize both the network platform and at least one database application running on the network. All network problems, including:
authorisations
backups
CPU usage time
data retrieval
flaky sectors on hard drive
lockups
logons
security breaches.
Optimising the system will require undertaking network administration including:
administer users
awareness of database security
awareness of net and shared services
control database
create database
install database software
manage database interfaces
manage schema objects and data
manipulate storage structures
monitor and resolve lock conflicts
perform database backup
perform database recovery
performance monitoring
proactive maintenance.
Develop a full report that outlines:
Methodologies applied - implementation, logical design, scoping, technical optimisation.
Identified network problems.
Optimisation activities undertaken.
Cost Benefit Analysis.
You will also be required to deliver one training session for network users to outline at least one database optimization technique.
