Assessment - Developing Intercultural Competence

Your Task

In response to the following scenario, students will produce a one-page infographic entitled
‘Developing Intercultural Competence'. The infographic will detail what information is needed for staff to work in a culturally diverse environment.

Assessment Description

You work for a medium-sized Australian business. You manage a cohesive, supportive, and friendly work team of 25 people who have worked together for the past 10 years. Your company has invited 15 new staff from your subsidiary in Thailand to assist with a project in Australia. Fifteen of the new staff will soon join your team.

Your current work team are all native English-speaking, 2nd generation Australians. They have minimal experience working overseas or with new migrant workers to Australia. You need to design an infographic which will be required to deliver three outcomes:

An understanding of cultural differences based on Hofstede's (1980) model of Intercultural Dimensions and Hall's (1963) high-context versus low-context culture.

Three practical examples of how to adapt messages to make them relevant and understandable for all members of staff. These examples may be drawn upon either Hofstede's theory or Hall's theory of high- context versus low-context cultures, or both.

Three strategies (specific actions) that will make the new staff feel welcome and supported and be part of the team

Assessment Instructions

You are required to prepare a one-page infographic. The contents of the infographic are to give a clear and succinct snapshot of what the staff needs to learn to work cooperatively in the intercultural environment and encourage them to take specific actions regarding intercultural communication and welcoming the Thai employees. Most importantly, you will include why they will be learning and doing those things by linking them to relevant theories.

What is an infographic?
An infographic is a succinct visual representation of information. It includes a variety of elements such as images, icons, text, charts, and diagrams to convey messages briefly. It helps to communicate complex and detailed information in an easily understandable format.

The design of this infographic is entirely your choice. Exploring sources such as Canva and PowerPoint will provide templates to prepare your Infographic. Remember to adhere to the principles of an infographic - less text and more imagery to convey meaning.

Your Infographic must contain the following information:

A minimum of two theories and models of Cultural Intelligence.
Screenshot of the graph from Hofstede's "Country Comparison Website" presenting the cultural differences between Australia and Thailand.

Minimum of five refereed journals are included in the infographic.
Minimum of one such as websites, government publications, census data and newspaper articles.
3 examples of communications and 3 specific strategies on how to welcome new staff.
