Topic - Information research skills for management study and practice

Learning outcomes - This topic will get you started on your way to achieving this learning outcome in the subject:

• research and communicate effectively and professionally in a variety of organisational settings.

This topic focuses on information research skills. Topic 5 will cover academic writing and referencing skills, which are essential for professional communication.

In this topic, we want you to work on three skill areas, summarised in the diagram.

1. Developing information search strategies to solve problems.

2. Determining where to look for information to solve problems

3. Evaluating the quality of information that you find so that it is indeed 'fit for purpose' to solve your problem.

Learning activity 1 -

You are seeking information to support your work in Assessment 1. (This is a starting point. You will need to locate additional sources for the assessment.)Make a list of the issues from the case that you believe will need to be investigated further to do assessment 1.

Learning activity 2 -

Having read the case and watched this video, you should now be able to refine your list of 'angles' or issues that need to be investigated in order to address the assessment task. After all, the best advice that you can give is informed advice, not just what you feel.

So, try this activity. Make or update your list of the issues from the case that you believe will need to be examined in Assessment 1.

Learning activity 3 -

Using three issues that you have identified that need to be investigated, think of search terms that you could use to find information. (We will look at where to find information next.)

Learning activity 4 -

You are now ready to try out some information searching. Use your search terms to locate at least three information sources that you can use to answer Assessment 1.Warning: information searching can sometimes be frustrating. This is because the number and relevance of 'hits' will be determined by the quality of the search terms being applied. You may need to experiment with different combinations of search terms. Hang in there. You may need to refine your search terms and re-search several times.

Learning activity 5 -

When you have selected three possible sources of information from your searching to use in your assessment, apply the CRAP test to each source. Summarise your work using the table.
