On the other hand, a new patient to our practice came into our waiting room diaphoretic and nauseous, developing crushing chest pain within the same time frame of her scheduled visit. Of course, it was obvious she was having an MI, but she died on her way to the hospital from an eroded mitral valve with rupture of the chordae tendineae. Record review indicated her past normal ECGs were never followed up by a more aggressive evaluation for her intermittent chest discomfort attributed to reflux. She was 52 years old, African American, obese, a smoker, with a significant family history of CV disease- all the risk factors lined up and included.
