Licensed Assistive Personnel

Delegation remains a key skill that must be imparted and practiced for nurses to develop proficiency and use it to deliver nursing care. The process entirely involves the development of skills as well as the application of critical thinking and enhances with education and nursing experience. These delegation skills require time to learn and develop. The Registered Nurse has personal accountability for learning and adopting critical thinking skills. The actions that should be taken to create a national and/or state policy agenda about the educational preparation of unlicensed assistive personnel and the competencies required for them to have a safe practice (Niles, 2019).

The unlicensed assistive personnel form paraprofessionals who help patients with various health issues like physical disabilities, mental impairments and basic nursing procedures in their daily activities and provide care. This is done under the command of a registered nurse.

• Reflecting on how the registered nurse thinks and evaluate the steps that are often missed.

• Identify personal indicators such as ailment, short staffing or stress at home that serve as a warning on the status of thinking ability. When these personal indicators are less than optimal they may lower the focus on work issues.

• Participating in and managing discussions related to clinical scenarios.

• Participating in the mentorship program as either a participant or a mentor.

• Developing a specific educational strategy that is based on lessons learnt where the strengths and educational needs can be identified from the feedback. This may include Learning from personal mistakes and the mistakes of others.

• Utilize creative thinking skills as well as problem-solving to accustom to stepwise critical thinking processes.

• It is also important to trust individual intuition or the immediate judgement that something is amiss.

Registered nurses must acquire the needed education and mentorship regarding how to delegate and effectively supervise unlicensed assistive personnel. This includes providing and receiving feedback and reviewing the outcomes from patients after the performance of the delegated activity. Registered nurses serving as educators are encouraged to offer programs that incorporate the principles of delegation as well as handle areas that require improvement.

Principles for Delegation

The nurse manager needs some key general principles to review with professional registered nurses in delegating to unlicensed assistive personnel. The principles provide guidelines and explain the registered nurse's decision-making concerning delegation. These principles include;

• Nursing as a profession controls the scope and policies of nursing.

• The registered nurse has the responsibility and accountability to provide for nursing practice.

• The registered nurse guides care and ensure the proper use of resources in the course of providing care.

• The registered nurse may delegate duties or some aspects of nursing care excluding the delegation of the nursing process itself.

• The registered nurse puts in consideration the healthcare center policies and procedures as well as the nursing skills, training, awareness, on diversity and experience of the person whom the registered nurse may assign some elements of care.

• The decision to assign elements of care is based on the registered nurse's judgment concerning the complexity of care for the patient and the availability and capability of the person accepting the delegation as well as the kind and level of supervision needed (Fried & Fottler, 2018).

• The healthcare center is accountable to give adequate resources to facilitate proper delegation.

• Healthcare center policies on the delegation are created with registered nurses playing active participation.
