Assignment

For this course you are to plan out a project of your choosing and start the process of developing a project plan for that project.

For this assignment, you can assume that the project charter has been approved and you can now take on the role of the project manager in planning out the scope of your project. Your plan will be developed in two parts - this part, which is the scope, and the final part, which defines your supporting plans.

Assignment Purpose
In this assignment you will develop an approximately 5-8 page initial project plan (also known as a Project Management Plan [PMP] or a Project Implementation Plan [PIP]) for a project that interests you.

Assignment Objectives
Your personal learning objectives for this assignment are to:

Develop an understanding of how a project plan is used within a project environment.

Demonstrate a practical understanding of the actual information content needed within a project plan.

Describe a project using project management terminology, concepts and industry best practices as outlined in the PMBOK.

Assignment Background
Some information regarding this assignment:

You can assume that all of the information (such as the high-level budget) that would normally be presented in a project charter is available and can be used in this assignment (you can simply make up the information).

You will not be evaluated on the accuracy of your project plan's raw information (such as task durations or costs). Simply indicate what the information is that you are using, and proceed with your plan.

For this assignment you are not expected to have any previous expertise or specific knowledge of your project topic. However, the project topic that you select should support demonstrating your understanding of project management.

Your page count does not include a Table of Contents, cover page or bibliography.

For this assignment, you are to select a project topic that interests you, and then either research the information needed to create a project plan, or simply make it up.

The goal is to use the information that you supply in the following template to demonstrate the project management industry best practices, tools, techniques and concepts that appear in the PMBOK to describe the project.

The following template has been provided to guide you in your efforts. Your Project Management Plan shall contain the following sections:
Title Page: You can be creative with your title page (for example, you can include illustrations and graphics), but at a minimum, the title page must present the following information:

Your name (or the names of all of your group members, if applicable),
The course name,
Project name
The date submitted, and
The following statement: "All material prepared for this assignment was produced by the authors, and material from a third party (such as the internet) has been cited and referenced."

Table of Contents: The Table of Contents must be generated using your word processor's built-in ‘Table of Contents' generation feature (found within the [References] Tab of WORD).

Project Background: In this section you should present the reader with the key (previously published) information that they need to understand this document. You are to summarize the relevant highlights from your initial project presentation assignment (Project Charter information); do not re-publish the project charter - instead, just pick out and summarize the key highlights in a paragraph or so (you can include additional information if you wish, as long as it is similar to what would be found in a project charter). (Project Charter PMBOK section 4.1.1)

Project Scope: Provide a short description of what the project will produce. For the purpose of this section, the term ‘Project Scope' is defined as the ‘sum of the products, services, and results to be provided within the project' (paraphrased from the PMBOK Glossary). Do not mix this term up with similar terms such as:
‘Scope Statement' (PMBOK Guide section 5.3.3.1)
‘Scope Baseline' (PMBOK Guide section 5.4.3.1)
‘Product Scope': (PMBOK Guide section 5.0)

Assumptions (PMBOK section 5.3.3.1): List 2-3 examples of high-level assumptions that would need to be made as part of your planning process. Briefly describe why these assumptions were needed and how they impacted your planning process. (Only include assumptions that would need to be made that would have a direct impact on the project's planning process.)
Constraints (PMBOK Section 5.3.3.1): List 2 -3 examples of high-level external constraints that have been imposed upon the project. Briefly describe how each of these constraints impacted the project planning process.
Project Exclusions (Out-Of-Scope Work) (PMBOK Section 5.3.3.1): Identify examples of work that is key to the project success, but that will not be completed as part of the project (for example, work that might be done by a different contractor who is not under the project manager's direct control).

Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) (PMBOK 5.4.2): Based on your understanding of the tasks needed to complete your project, create a project WBS. Your project WBS should only show levels 1 - 3, and not the lower-level details.
WBS Dictionary: Select two project tasks that you wish to expand upon, and create WBS dictionary entries for each of these tasks.
Having selected two tasks, you are then required to create a WBS dictionary (PMBOK Section 5.4.3.1) entry for each task. The information provided for each WBS entry should include the following topics:

Task name: A descriptive task name.

Task Deliverables (PMBOK Sections 4.3.3.1, 5.3.3.1 and 5.4.3.1): List 1 - 3 examples of tangible deliverables or outcomes that would be appropriate for this type of task and provide a short description of each deliverable. (Note: Do not specify the ‘work' that would be required to produce the deliverable or outcome - only identify the deliverables themselves.)

Task Project Requirements (PMBOK 5.2): Provide 2-4 examples of requirements that would be appropriate for a task of this nature.

Task Project Acceptance Criteria (PMBOK 5.3.3.1): List 2-4 examples of success criteria that need to be achieved for the tasks to be considered successful.

Task Risks (PMBOK Chapter 11): Identify at least two risks (risk means uncertainty - they can either be threats or opportunities) that would apply to each task.

Task Quality Standard(s): Identify at least one third-party quality standard that would be applicable to this task. The quality standard should describe how the work is to be performed (this is different from a project requirement that describes what must be done).

Task Mandatory Dependency (PMBOK section 6.3.2.2): Identify one or more scheduling-related mandatory task dependencies. A task dependency is a task that would have to be completed before this task could be started.

Task External Dependency (PMBOK section 6.3.2.2): Identify if there are any organizations, agencies or individuals who are outside the project manager's direct control, but whose cooperation, support or approval is required for this task to succeed.

Task Stakeholder Communication Requirements (PMBOK section 10.1): Identify any formal communication requirements that would be associated with this task. Note: you can assume that informal communication goes on all the time, so just identify:
What will need to be communicated;
When (and how frequently) this communication would be needed; and
Who would be involved in this communication?
