CIS 207 Database Management

Project: Human Resource Management System

1. INTRODUCTION

The aim of this project is to enable students integrate and apply the database design and management knowledge and skills acquired by developing a human resource management system for a small organization. During this project, a student is expected to analyze, design, implement and test a small human resource database management system. The project will be done within a predetermined timeframe and be formally presented for examination.

2. PROJECT DESCRIPTION

A student is given a human resource data requirement on which to base the project. The student then maps out a plan of action to design and implement a database management system for an organization's human resource database management system. Incorporated into this plan is a requirements document or blueprint that spells out how the database will be developed. This database management system will manage data relevant to the human resource department of the organization. At the same time, this database system must have functionalities that allow users to add content, remove content, search, and query the content. The database system is expected to have some security measures in the form of data entry validations. The database system should also have navigation and way-finding mechanisms that are sensitive to usability and accessibility concerns of users. The student is expected to document all the stages in the database development life cycle.

3. ACTIVITIES
Use the steps listed below as guidelines in developing the database system. 1. System Analysis
-Describe the structure of the human resource department for which the system is to be developed.
-Capture the key components of the section using a context diagram
-Use a data flow diagram (DFD) to show the processes and flow of data.
-Describe the objectives of the proposed database system 2. Database Design
a) Conceptual Design -Apply the entity relationship modeling (ERM) for the conceptual design of the database. Use Chen's notation. All the ER diagrams should be fully labeled.
b) Selection of the database management system (DBMS) to be used. In this case, Microsoft Access shall be used by all students. Describe the key features of Ms Access, its advantages and disadvantages.
c) Logical Design - Map the conceptual design into a logical model based on the chosen database constructs i.e., Microsoft Access.
d) Physical Design - Describe the data storage organization, integrity, and security. 3. Implementation
-Ensure Ms Access is installed in your computer system
-Using Ms Access, convert the database design into a useable system by creating:
a) Tables and their relationships
b) Forms for data entry and reports output
c) Necessary queries
d) User forms, buttons, and menus for ease of navigation.
e) Test the system with sets of dummy but typical data.

-Challenges faced during the development of the database management system.
-Recommendations for implementation and future improvements.

-All the references including websites
Note: The project document should be saved in MS WORD. The file name should be the first and last name of the student separated by an underscore.
