Read this scenario
You are the newly hired Director of Human Resources and Occupational Health & Safety at the "Scoops Ahoy", a very large ice cream retailer and party venue located in Starcourt Mall in Hawkins, Ontario. It houses a retail store, a restaurant, an ice cream production facility, a bakery, conference facilities and a maintenance department. The workplace employees 90 workers.
You notice when you start that the accident statistics are very high and there does not seem to be anything in place to try to bring them down. The workplace has only been open for several years and you notice that there is no Occupational Health & Safety Program in place. There have been many accidents and you realize that there is no disability management program in place to get these injured workers back to work.
When you bring this up to the President, Steve Harrington, and he tasks you with developing an Occupational Health & Safety Program for the workplace to turn things around. The main things that you notice is that there is no Joint Health & Safety Committee or Disability Management Program in place.
If there is anything about the company that you don't know, make it up. As your foundation has some big-name backers, money is no object but still stay within reason. (No personal jets) Make sure that this program only applies to this specific workplace and not the entire organization or multiple workplaces. Remember you are writing this report for the management of your company and not for the facilitator at Algonquin College.
P.S. - This workplace will fall under the Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act and not the Canada Labour Code. Also note that for this assignment the workplace would fall under the Industrial Establishments Regulations.

Company Description
List the operational details of your company in a short overview. Include such aspects as Market space (What is the company? What do you sell? Where is it? Why is this a good location, etc....?), departmental divisions within the company, number of employees in each department, etc....) Make up any details that you don't know but provide me with a good understanding of your company.
Step 2:
Joint Health & Safety Committee Structure
- Include how you will establish a working "Joint Health & Safety Committee" and how it will function. You will want to discuss the committee requirements from section 9 of the Occupational Health & Safety Act. Be very detailed. Quote sections from the Act where applicable.
- Be sure to utilize your Guide to the Joint Health & Safety Committee.
- Reminder: This section is worker 40 marks so be detailed.
Step 3:
Stakeholders in Disability Management
You have been assigned the task of developing a Disability Management Program for the workplace. Before you start, you need to figure out who are the main players in a successful Disability Management Program. As you start researching you identify seven stakeholders that need to be involved in coordinating an effective Disability Management Program.
- Define Disability Management.
- Define and discuss the 7 "Stakeholders in Disability Management" and apply them to the workplace in the scenario.
- IMPORTANT - This is not developing a Disability Management Plan, just a discussion about the Stakeholders.
- Be sure to apply the 7 stakeholders to the workplace in the scenario. This is worth 35% of the assignment so don't skimp out on this part.
