A 30 year old female brings in her 3 kids to clinic. She is concerned because they all developed a runny nose and cough a few days after attending a birthday party. The 8 and 6 year old both have a h/o asthma and started coughing this morning. The 7 year old started has a negative medical history, started coughing 2 days ago, and has a fever of 101.8F at the clinic today. There has been a spike in influenza A cases within the community over the last couple of weeks. No one in the family has received an influenza vaccine this year. Since the clinic is limited on POC rapid flu tests you only order a swab on the febrile patient. The test quickly comes back positive for influenza A. In response the NP: leis the mother that the year old has the fiu and that you recommend the other two kids go ahead and get the influenza vaccine today to help prevent them from getting the flu from their sibling leils the mother that theyear old has influenza A and that you are diagnosing the other 2 children with influenza based off community activity, symptoms, and close contact.
