Mrs. Smith has O-negative blood, and she received 2 units of O-negative blood 8 months ago for a chronic gastrointestinal (GI) bleed. She does not have a history of any other prior transfusions. She now needs 3 more blood units for the same condition. Her plasma was cross-matched with the red cells from two O-negative donors. One unit is compatible, but one is not. Further tests reveal she developed an anti-C antibody. Where did this antibody come from, and why was only of the units incompatible?
