Communicating Data: Infographic + Analysis Memo

Purpose of This Assignment

- To practice composing information for public consumption
- To become familiar with and apply the theories and principles of design
- To demonstrate an understanding of visual rhetoric
- To practice describing, analyzing, and justifying design decisions
- To consider the ethics of document design
- To continue building collaboration skills through effective team communication and management
- To continue practicing presentation skills
- To continue practicing ethical research and citation practices

We continually consume, produce, and share information. For this unit, we will think critically about how and why we share data (check out the Wikipedia pages for data visualization and infographics for a general overview). As a class, we will explore the various visual rhetorical strategies and design principles involved with visual communication.

Your project will be, as a team, to develop an infographic that demonstrates an understanding of visual design and genre conventions while communicating data to a general (public) audience.

Instructions

Step 1: As a team, decide on a topic and choose the rhetorical aim of your infographic (informative or persuasive). Consider what you want your audience to know.

Step 2: Develop and plan your research questions and gather research data. Your infographic must use data from at least four sources.

You are encouraged to and will likely have more, but beware of data dumping/overwhelming your audience. Keep track of your data sources for your reference list.

Step 3: Develop, Design, and Build. Infographics are visual arguments (remember, all communication is persuasive). As such, you should plan/develop your infographic with your audience and purpose in mind (rhetoric!). How do you want your audience to encounter this information? Using the visual rhetorical and design principles we have read and discussed as a class, choose a variety of graphic elements-illustrations, tables, charts, statistics-to convey information on your topic. You should use a variety of graphic elements and facts to communicate the data you've gathered through Step 2.

Step 4: Analysis Memo. As a team, you will be responsible for conducting an analysis of your infographic. In 2-3 pages, this collaborative memo should be addressed to me and discuss Steps 1-3 of this assignment. You should begin with a brief description of the development of the project: the aim of the infographic and the research questions/process. The bulk of this memo, however, should describe, analyze, and justify the design decisions you made in creating the infographic. Finally, include the reference list for your infographic at the end of this memo.
