Question: Develop your own interpretation of STATION ELEVEN. In this project, you will need to work with specific quoted passages from the text and to be as concise and sharply focused as possible. At the same time, the word count is spacious enough to allow you to explore your critical angle/argument and to begin to wrap your mind around its complexity.
Connections: We've talked a lot about how and why Mandel makes connections between characters. You could zoom in on some of these connections and do some further thinking and writing about them. (How strong or fragile are they? What do they mean to the characters? What do they signify to you?) And of course you can also explore connections between the past and the present. One way to think about connections is to map out the structure of the novel. When does Mandel jump from past to present or from present to past? How does she juxtapose the before and after? How do the befor e and the after relate to each other? Or you could study an object that crosses over from the before to the after. I'm thinking about the comic book and the paperweight here, but there are probably other examples, too. Trace one or two of these objects through the book. Does this object help connect characters? If yes, how? If not, what work does this object do in the book?
